Wars on the World Stage

The many wars and many opinionators in 2025 CE on the World Stage

In this month of August 2025 there are so many wars going on in the human world that most of them do not make the BBC headlines anymore, although from the position in geo-graphy, events are always real, whether or not the press of the world is there.

Within the life zone, that tiny weeny little slither of habitable life around the mass of Earth, as it spins on its own axis around the Sun, which is the giver of all the fundamentals of our existence, which are an earth to live on, held in place by gravity, and the Light which activates life itself, within the life zone, the organisms which still adhere to logic are also at war. Every living being defends its territory, fights to the death if necessary over food and water, and to protect its next generation, and eats from the same world it inhabits, thereby squaring the circle and not doing any damage at all to the overall balance of survival for the life zone as a whole. Apart from the business of eating from within the allotted parameters, which involves all parts of the food chain consuming living beings, and even grass although not itself a consumer of organisms is still within the vast and extraordinary interplay going on, even if in such reduced circumstances because of the human activity, the natural world consumes and is consumed all within its allotted radius. An eagle will cover more miles (the right kind of air miles) than a snail, but it all makes sense when the focus is taken back into the overview. As every living being needs somewhere to be that life, place is so obviously a part of the equation that it doesn’t even need to be said. And the more complex the being, the more the word territory is applicable, because territory is different to habitat – habiter in French, and habitation as being more the place itself.

The word territory is not habitat and territory probably once was also from the French, terroir, maybe, this writer is not a linguist but does speak reasonable French and its surprising just how many words have lost their real meaning when entering the realm of English. But back to territory in the western civilization meaning, and territory comes with the reality of a jurisdiction which stops at the edge of that territory, in law, culture, language, still a general ethnicity, yes we can say that even today, and definitely an element of defence, because the next territory is exactly that, a different territory. That is about as normal as could be isn’t it, even with the strange development of human society over the last few thousand years.

Something stood out strange and clear this week as the two major wars going on in August 2025 – Gaza/Israel and Russia/Ukraine – have been in great detail in world news. A few days ago France became the first G7 country to speak of recognising a/the state of Palestine. The ‘UK’, which supplies weapons to Israel and says its needs the income and jobs that creates, got a surprise and joined the debate, like many other countries did. The ancient lands of the eastern Mediterranean are long lost in how geo-graphy would mark out human societies, and now these lands are under the gaze of the modern media. The same week has the Russia/Ukraine events under the spotlight of talks and leaders travelling and discussing, with again no clear questions or answers, just as no regional war has any clear sense when run through the global opinions. The occupation of Eire is long forgotten, and these two big conflict areas stand in giant testimony to western politics of the C.21.

The writing of Gaza/Israel was deliberate rather than Israel on Gaza, because in these two current public conflicts, it was the action of Hamas taking the hostages which begun this intense and disastrous conflict, and some of those hostages are still under the capture of Hamas. Russia/Ukraine likewise, Russia did invade Ukraine, with one reason given to protect the Russian humans in the Donbas. The volume and heated opinions of humans around the western world on these two conflicts shows something quite illogical about actual war, in which humans naturally engage, just as does every other active life force, for natural reasons of survival.

The visceral hatred in discussion held far away from both war zones, and by people who have never been and never will be going to those regions, is astonishing. And at a governmental level, the desire to put as right and wrong, the good one and the baddie, has probably come from watching too many films. With the leader of Russia the shorthand for the baddie these days, and paradoxically the Hamas leaders who planned and carried out the taking of Israeli hostages being separated in the western eye from the people themselves of Palestine who are now seen as aggressed by Israel, with the reason for that catastrophic military action lost from significance as people line up on either pro Palestine or pro Israel, and everything brought down to the pure personal impression of seeing such a disastrous chain of events unfold. If instead of recognising the state of Palestine, all the western leaders gathered together and made a collective statement that first the remaining hostages are to be returned to Israel, what would happen? Alas even such a statement shows how un-localised and how un-geo-graphical the human world is these days, as to why the so many wars are also fought in the opinion levels and news reporting levels, as if they themselves were impacted.

If everyone who had an opinion also had to make a brief list of what their interests were, if any, how different would it make the major conflict zones look? If the ‘UK’ government had to list just how many resources are used from Ukraine from electronic parts, auto parts, sunflower oil, and probably so many other just below the surface parts of the crazy global movement of production and now complete dependency. How much of the opinion on a war by a government is actually self protection to ensure its highly unnatural dependency on resources thousands of miles away is not disrupted, otherwise its citizens will be fed up and will not vote them in again next time? When emotion is overlaid by the western powers on who is the victim and who the aggressor, how would it ever be possible to come to a solution when the world stage has become the arena, instead of a geo-graphically defined region in the crisis of war, and which has been a fundamental shaping of human history since the indigenous tribes post the last glacial were gradually replaced by humans measuring further and further away from their logical place on Earth.
